![]() ![]() ![]() Children of its members attended the newly founded Muhammad University of Islam, an institution that was challenged by the Detroit and Chicago boards of education.In 1934, the Nation of Islam founded Final Call to Islam, a newspaper to educate members and recruit new ones.Wallace Fard disappeared in 1934 and Elijah became his successor as “Minister of Islam”.The Allah Temple of Islam changed its name to the Nation of Islam.Elijah became the leader of the Detroit group.He became the leader of the Nation’s Temple No.Poole was then given a Muslim surname: first, it was Karriem, then it was changed to Muhammad.Poole, his wife, and some of his brothers joined Fard’s movement.Because of Poole’s first hand experience of the racial struggles of blacks in the South, he quickly aligned himself with Fard’s ideology.In his speeches, Wallace Fard would talk about the culture and history stolen from the blacks because of slavery and the opportunity to regain their right to self-determination.In August 1931, he attended a speech on Islam and black empowerment by Wallace Fard Muhammad, as part of the Allah Temple of Islam movement.In Detroit, Elijah attended meetings of Black Nationalist movements.Elijah and Clara had eight children – six boys and two girls.During the Great Depression era when the economy was at a low, Poole had a hard time finding and keeping work.Poole had seen for himself white men lynching black men.They were among the thousands of black families forming the First Great Migration.Elijah Poole married Clara Evans on March 7, 1917.He stopped schooling when he was in the third grade and became a sharecropper to help his family.He was the the seventh of thirteen children of William Poole Sr., a Baptist preacher, and Mariah Hall.Elijah Muhammad was born Elijah Robert Poole on Octoin Sandersville, Georgia.See the fact file below for more information on the Elijah Muhammad or alternatively, you can download our 21-page Elijah Muhammad worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
